During the last few years more and more doctors have started to prescribe Dapagliflozin for controlling Type 2 Diabetes. It has been prescribed particularly for patients who are unable to tolerate metformin for various reasons. Dapagliflozin is a sodium-glucose transport proteins inhibitor. By blocking the transport proteins, which absorb glucose in the kidney, dapagliflozin can help the body eliminate glucose through the urine. The drug was approved by the FDA as long ago as 2014. Apart from its action to reduce blood sugar by excreting it through urine it also seems to act on the cardiovascular system to reduce the blood pressure. A study published in The Lancet in 2015 indicated that it can lower blood pressure and HbA1c in the patient with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes and hypertension. If patients are already receiving a beta blocker or calcium blocker to lower their blood pressure, taking dapagliflozin may further reduce it. It will therefore be necessary to reduce the dose of antihypertensive medication. Blood pressure should be monitored regularly to adjust the dose of other antihypertensive drugs.
