TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
This Italian retrospective observational cohort study of critically ill patients (N = 3988) with confirmed COVID-19 evaluated the independent risk factors associated with mortality.
The patient median age was 63. The majority (79.9%) were men, and 60.5% had at least one comorbidity. The median time from symptoms to ICU admission was 10 days and the median length of ICU stay was 12 days.
Independent mortality risk factors included: older age, male sex, history of COPD, hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, high positive end-expiratory pressure or low PaO2:FiO2 ratio, and high fraction of inspired oxygen.
