A report in the Times of India indicates that you can extend your life by 3 years by running for just 7 minutes daily. A paper from Iowa State University said that researchers found that people who ran for less than 51 minutes per week have the same mortality benefits compared to those who ran for more than 3 hours per week. The benefits were the same no matter how long, far, frequently or fast they ran.

The study was conducted on 55137 adults between the ages of 18 and 100 over a 15 year period. Those who ran had a 30% lower risk of death from all causes and 45% lower risk of death from heart disease or stroke. The benefits were the same irrespective of your sex, age, BMI, whether you were a smoker or consumer of alcohol. The optimum running speed was between 7.1 to 7.6 mph which cut down the risk of dying from heart attack or stroke by 60%.

    My View:

Beware. If you are not used to running do not start running suddenly. You may infact precipitate a heart attack particularly if you are obese or not so young. You can start walking briskly and gradually build up to a run over a period of weeks or sometimes even months.
