ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM
The ABDOMINAL AORTA has a tendency in some , to enlarge gradually and become dangerous when large , to burst suddenly , without any warning. People with high blood pressure have a higher incidence.
6 time more common in men to happen, usually does not produce any symptoms , and has a very high fatality rate at rupture.
Key outcome of screening is , reduction of avoidable mortality
By identifying the enlargement early, regular monitoring can be undertaken.
The operation if needed, depending on high risk size for rupture, is done in Specialised units.
AAA- screening is aimed at MEN, 65 yrs AND OLDER, by ultrasound scanning. THERE IS NO UPPER AGE LIMIT FOR SCREENING.
THIS SCREENING IS EVIDENCE BASED AND IS BEING APPLIED ACROSS ENGLAND BY THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE.
