The Times Newspaper reported that more than 1000 patients die every month in hospitals in UK because of dehydration. This happens particularly among older patients waiting for surgery. They are left “Nil by mouth” for too long before surgery leaving them vulnerable to AKI. It is also stated that more than half of patients who die in hospitals have kidney injury. Professor O’Donoghue, consultant renal physician at Salford Royal Hospital said that good basic care would save all these lives. Nurses and doctors need to make elementary checks to prevent AKI. He also said patients waiting for surgery should not be asked to go without water for more than 2 hours.
