Scientists have found that stroke patients recover faster if they play a computer game with a carer rather than alone. Researchers at Imperial College London developed a game called Balloon Buddies, where players have to co-operate, to help patients to build up muscle strength.
Michael Mace from the university said: “Video games are a great way of providing repetitive exercise. However, most are designed for users to play on their own, which can discourage and isolate many. We developed the game to enable patients to train with their friends, family or caregivers.” The results of a pilot study of 16 patients at Charing Cross Hospital were published in the Journal of Neuro Engineering and Rehabilitation.
