Early Detection of Elevated Cardiac Biomarkers Optimizes Risk Stratification in Patients With COVID-19
Heart (British Cardiac Society) 26th August 2020

Patients with confirmed COVID-19 treated in a tertiary center were assessed to evaluate the utility of cardiac biomarkers assessed early in the disease process for risk stratification.

The odds ratio for mortality compared with patients with normal cardiac biomarkers on admission was 4.35 for those with elevated high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-TnI) levels, 7.37 for those with elevated B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels, and 18.75 for those with both elevated hs-TnI and BNP levels.

Elevation of both hs-TnI and BNP was a strong predictor of the risk of all-cause mortality.
Cardiac biomarkers should be routinely assessed on admission for COVID-19 to facilitate optimal risk prediction and appropriate management.
