SUMMARY:Monkey Pox - Should We Worry?
DESCRIPTION:After the news media’s interest in reporting about Corona Virus started to wane\, a new infection called the “Monkey Pox” caught their attention. The WHO in 2023 indicated that a global outbreak of “MPox” was possible. The general population is not very sure if this is something serious that they should worry about. To increase one’s anxiety newspapers around the world now report on any patient admitted to a local hospital with Mpox. Should we worry? How does it spread?\n\nTo get a clearer picture we asked Prof. Ravi\, a senior virologist in Bangalore to tell us a little about this new disease. He agreed to talk to us at our next online meeting.\n\nProf. Ravi needs no introduction as he has addressed us a few times in the past. He was the Senior Professor and Head of the Dept of Virology at NIMHANS in Bangalore. During the pandemic he had served on many Task Force and Scientific Advisory Committees. After retirement he was appointed as Co-Chairman of Vaccine Committee\, Ministry of Science and Technology\, India. He was involved with several research projects connected with the development of vaccines at various centres in India.  He is still very active with his research projects.

SUMMARY:Mosquito Borne Diseases in India - Symptoms\, Treatment & Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Mosquito-borne diseases or mosquito-borne illnesses are diseases caused by bacteria\, viruses or parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. Nearly 700 million people contract mosquito-borne illnesses each year\, resulting in more than a million deaths world wide. \nMost of us know that malaria and dengue are spread by mosquitoes. Other diseases like chikungunya\, filariasis\, Japanese encephalitis and many others are less known but being seen in larger number these days. Symptoms from some of these diseases are not always easy to recognise. \nDr Senthur Nambi who is an Infectious Diseases Consultant at Apollo Hospitals has agreed to talk to our group on this topic. He is a graduate of Stanley Medical College and did his MD at Kilpauk Medical College. He is also a Fellow of the National Board in Infectious Diseases. He is a Governing Council Member\, Clinical Infectious Diseases Society of India. He is an excellent clinician who explains everything clearly to his patients. Our members already know Dr. Nambi well as he had spoken to us on a different topic in the past. Members should expect a very interesting evening on 12th October.

SUMMARY:A Tribute to Professor M M Cooper
DESCRIPTION:This Online meeting is dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Prof. M. M. Cooper\, a remarkable educator whose contributions have left an indelible mark at Madras Medical College. He was Professor of Anatomy at the College during the 60s. \nProf. Cooper was more than just a teacher; he was an innovator in medical education. His unique method of teaching\, particularly his ability to vividly illustrate the development of the human embryo using only colored chalks on a blackboard\, has become legendary among those who had the privilege to learn from him. These illustrations were not just drawings; they were masterpieces of educational art that brought complex concepts to life. \nAs we plan this special event\, we are reaching out to all former students\, colleagues\, and friends of Prof. Cooper who are spread around the world to come together and share their stories\, photos\, and messages. Your memories are the mosaic that will piece together the profound impact Prof. Cooper had on each of us. \nFor those who wish to speak about Prof. Cooper or contribute to the memorial we are creating\, please reach out to us. This memorial will serve as a beacon for future generations of graduates\, a testament to a teacher who could inspire without the need for modern technology. \nLet us come together to pay homage to a man who was not only a great teacher but also a guiding light for many in the field of medicine.

SUMMARY:About Can-Stop
DESCRIPTION:Can-Stop is a community based\, organization dedicated to helping people with cancer. They provide counselling services in a holistic manner. The Organization was started by Dr. Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan as a fitting tribute to her late husband Dr. S. Rangarajan. \nDr. Rangarajan son of late Mr. T.S. Santhanam of the TVS Family is the Founder of Sundaram Medical Foundation that he established in 1994. His vision was to help the community at large by providing cost effective quality health care. Unfortunately\, before he could realise all his dreams\, at the age of 52 he died from a brain cancer. Dr Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan took up the mantle to continue with what he started. She started several community based projects for the people who needed support. \nDr. Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan is a Maxillofacial Surgeon at Sundaram Medical Foundation. She is also a Trustee and Director\, at the Hospital. She founded Can Stop and is now its Executive Director. She is a Rotarian and past President of Rotary Club of Madras. Her work has been recognised by several organisations and she is the recipient of several awards connected with her community work. \nThrough Can-Stop many initiatives have been undertaken including support for children affected by cancer and support for their families who come from economically weaker sections of society. For our online talk\, she will be explaining the work they do at Can-Stop and other community related projects.

SUMMARY:Combating Antimicrobial Resistance- Way ahead - Talk by Dr. Senthur Nambi\, MD.\, FNB.\,
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Senthur Nambi\, Senior Consultant\, Infectious Diseases & Co-Chair Hospital Infection\nControl Committee\, Apollo Group of Hospitals\, Chennai will be talking about antibiotics and infection control. \n \nToday there is much talk about the misuse of antibiotics and resistant strain of organisms emerging all over the world. Unlike the USA and Europe where a prescription is required to buy antibiotics\, the public in India can get antibiotics easily “over the counter”. Is this contributing to the increased number of resistant strain of organisms emerging in India today? \nDr Nambi is a highly qualified physician. He belongs to a number of prestigious societies whose members address many public health issues related to infectious diseases. He has published a large number of papers and has wide experience in treating patients with a variety of infectious diseases. We expect to have an interesting evening interacting with Dr. Nambi after his talk.

SUMMARY:Bala Mandir Kamaraj Trust - Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Your Name *Your Email *SubjectYour Message *MessageSubmit \n\nAmong the many things that our Foundation does\, one of them is undertake Health Related Outreach Charitable Activities. We are always looking for an organisation to support. One of our members suggested Bala Mandir Kamaraj Trust. This was an organisation that was established in 1949 by late Sri. K.Kamaraj and Smt. S. Manjubhashini. It is today a premier Social Welfare Organisation. \n\nThe core activity of Bala Mandir is its Children’s Programme. This covers all the ac\n\ntivities related to the holistic development of the children admitted to full-time care in Bala Mandir’s Homes in Chennai and Nagercoil. Bala Mandir is also an approved specialized Adoption Agency and all adoptions take place through the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA).\n\nTwo of the directors of our Foundation visited their centre in Chennai. We were so impressed with the way it is set up and run that we had no hesitation of handing them a cheque for medical expenses incurred for their children. Ms. Sangetha one of the co-ordinators who took us around\n\nsaid the money will be spent on vaccinating children under their care. Having seen the place we thought our members may like to learn more about it. We therefore requested Sangeetha to arrange for someone to talk to our group online about the organisation and about the varied activities that they undertake. They have obliged us by agreeing to talk on the 7th of May. Members will be sent the details of this event shortly.
